How to Check These General Contractors Before You Hire

This page lists 6 of the 206 general contractors with an active Washington registration and a business address in Stanwood. A row here is a starting point, not a recommendation. Before you sign anything, run through these checks:

  1. Match the name and number. The business name on the bid, truck or contract should match the registered name and registration number shown in the table. A different name can mean a different, unregistered company.
  2. Check the expiry date. Registrations must be renewed, and rows highlighted here expire within 60 days. Ask for proof of renewal if the date falls during your project.
  3. Confirm the bond. Washington requires a $30,000 surety bond for general contractors and $15,000 for specialty contractors (RCW 18.27.040). The bond is limited, so it is not a substitute for a good contract.
  4. Confirm insurance. RCW 18.27.050 requires public liability and property damage insurance for registered construction contractors. Ask for a certificate naming your project address.
  5. Re-check the live record. Our copy is from Oct 30, 2026. Open the business profile above, then confirm the current status with Washington L&I on the day you hire.

Electrical work also falls under a separate L&I electrical licensing program (RCW 19.28), and plumbers need individual certificates of competency (RCW 18.106). A missing row does not prove a business is unregistered, because our pages only include registrations with a Stanwood business address.

What Washington Law Requires of Every Business on This List

A Washington contractor registration is valid for two years and must be renewed on or before its expiry date (RCW 18.27.060). If the contractor's bond or insurance policy is cancelled, the registration is suspended automatically on the date of the cancellation, which is why a row's status can change between our updates. The required insurance, or an assigned account in its place, must cover $50,000 for property damage, $100,000 for injury or death to one person and $200,000 for injury or death to more than one person (RCW 18.27.050). All advertising that shows a contractor's name or address must also show its current registration number (RCW 18.27.100), so the number on a flyer or website should match the License # column above.

Homeowners with a breach-of-contract claim against the bond must file suit within two years of the date the work was substantially completed or abandoned (RCW 18.27.040). It is a gross misdemeanor to advertise, bid or work as a contractor without an active registration, or while one is suspended or revoked (RCW 18.27.020).
