How Guides Are Produced

Guides are researched from primary sources (RCW, Washington L&I, data.wa.gov), written in plain English and dated. Our Editorial Policy explains sourcing, independence and corrections.

What the Team Does

The editorial team researches each guide from primary sources: the Revised Code of Washington, Washington L&I program pages and the L&I contractor registration data on data.wa.gov. We write for homeowners who are about to hire someone, so each guide opens with a short answer, a quick facts table and the steps to take, followed by the detail and the sources.

How Facts Are Verified

Every dollar figure, deadline and requirement is checked against the current statute or agency page on the date shown as Last Checked. In our October 2026 review, for example, we corrected the combined single limit insurance figure to the $250,000 that L&I accepts and reworded the bond increase rule to match RCW 18.27.040 exactly. Statistics come straight from the state file, with the snapshot date on the page.

Independent Review

We are adding named reviewers with relevant professional experience. Their names, roles and credentials will appear on this page and on each guide they review once confirmed. Until then, no guide claims an expert review.
